When I log into PIV to look at my high school student's grades, I can only select 1st Marking Period or 2nd Marking Period. Aren't there six marking periods?
The high school has only two cumulative marking periods, measuring student progress from the beginning of each semester. While we send home "report cards" at six-week intervals, the report cards at the end of the 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th six weeks are, in actuality, progress reports to update you on student progress to date.
My high school student's report card came today, but when I log into PIV to look his/her grades, the grade in PIV is not the same as what is on the report card. Why?
The high school has only two cumulative marking periods, measuring student progress from the beginning of each semester. When the grades are not the same in PIV as on the paper report card, teachers for those classes most likely have recorded more assignment scores since the grades were uploaded for report cards. This typically occurs about 2:30 pm on the next school day following the end of six weeks. While we send home "report cards" at six-week intervals, the report cards at the end of the 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th six weeks are, in actuality, progress reports to update you on student progress.
When I look at individual assignments, sometimes I see an X or a Z instead of a score. What do these mean?
Missing assignments can be recorded in a variety of different ways, depending on the teacher. Some record a zero, some enter an X for “excused” and this score does not count against the student, or a Z for not turning in an assignment which turns to a zero at the end of the marking period.

I signed up to be notified of unexcused absences and now I am getting an email for every class period that my student is absent because of illness! How come?
I called the attendance voice mail to report my student's absence last night, but I still got an email notifying me of an unexcused absence this morning. Why did that happen?
When teachers take attendance they have only two options: unexcused absence and unexcused tardy. The school office then verifies that the absence or tardy is indeed excused and updates the gradebook attendance accordingly. Notification about absences left on the voice mail system are entered into the attendance system during the course of the morning. It's best to check PIV later in the day if you have a concern about an unexcused absence or tardy.
Can I change what reports I have emailed to me or how often they are sent?
You can change the settings for the Email Notification System at any time. Just log in to PIV, and click on the Email signup and enter the email address(es) you used to sign up. Make the appropriate changes and click "Submit."
Reports available through the Email Notification System:
Automatic "Unexcused Absence: Notification -- notification for each unexcused absence. Be aware, teachers teachers only have the option of marking an unexcused absence or unexcused tardy. It is up to the school office to verify that absences and tardies are excused and update the gradebook accordingly.
Standard Attendance Report -- lists a summary of the student's attendance for the semester.
Standard Grade Report -- lists the student's current grades in each class for each marking period and semester to date; a "report card."
Gradebook Report -- for each class, displays a description of each assignment, the score earned, the maximum number of points for the assignment, and the letter grade. This report also contains a current grade summary by category and well as the current grade.
Automatic Grade Notification -- sends a text email when the current grade for any particular class meets the requirements you specify (i.e.: under 90, above 70). This applies to the overall class grade, not individual assignments.
