GMCS Right sizing

What does “right-sizing” mean for GMCS?

It means looking at how GMCS can better align its schools, programs, and resources with the number of students we currently enroll so we can continue providing strong learning experiences and opportunities for every student.

Why is GMCS looking at changes to its schools?

Several of our schools currently have significantly more space than students, and some of our buildings are old enough to need major repair or replacement. Before considering any changes, we want to hear from students, families, and the community first.

What does the enrollment gap look like across GMCS schools?

Several of our schools are built to hold significantly more students than they currently enroll, in some cases only serving a third to half of the number of students the building was designed for. The picture isn’t the same everywhere; some GMCS schools are closer to capacity than others.

Is this about saving money?

Cost is part of the conversation, maintaining and repairing aging; underenrolled buildings is expensive, and being efficient with the district's overall spending is one of several priorities we're asking the community to weigh in on. This is more than finances: when a school enrollment is far below capacity, it can be harder to offer the same range of courses, programs, and staffing, including career & technical (vocational) options that students deserve.

Has GMCS already decided which schools will be affected?

No. The GMCS Board of Education has not selected and will not select any option described in the community survey before hearing from students, families, and the community.

What has already been decided, and what hasn’t?

Here is what has already been decided:

• Middle schools now serve grades 7–8, as of the 2025–26 school year.

• Gallup Central High School is being considered for closure.

• The previously planned full replacement of Gallup High School has been rescinded by the Board.

• The previously planned new CTE Academy building has been rescinded by the Board.

Nothing else described in the community survey has been decided.

Does this mean schools will be combined or closed?

Combining schools or adjusting attendance boundaries are among the ideas being explored, but no option has been chosen. For high schools, ideas being discussed include keeping Gallup High School and Miyamura High School open and separate, or combining them into one larger high school. For middle schools, ideas include keeping all three middle schools open and separate, combining into two, or combining into one. A “9th Grade Academy” school or dedicated wing for 9th graders has also been raised as an option.

How can I share my input?

GMCS is gathering community feedback through a short survey (about 2 minutes). Responses are anonymous unless you choose to provide your contact information.

What happens after the survey closes?

Community meetings will follow, giving families, students, staff, and community members additional opportunities to weigh in before any decisions are made.

How will I find out about community meetings?

Meeting dates will be posted at every school and shared through social media and GMCS website.
